July’s Book: Sentenced to Science
Welcome to the "What the Health" book club! In July, we will delve into the powerful and thought-provoking book, "Sentenced to Science: One Black Man's Story of Imprisonment in America."
This book follows the gripping and deeply personal account of a Black man who experienced imprisonment in America's criminal justice system. Through his narrative, we gain insights into the harrowing reality of his incarceration and how the prison system exploited his body and subjected him to unethical medical experiments.
"Sentenced to Science" sheds light on the intersection of race, incarceration, and medical exploitation. It confronts the disturbing history of using incarcerated individuals, particularly those from marginalized communities, as subjects for medical experimentation without their consent or proper oversight.
As we read this book, we are encouraged to critically examine the systemic injustices and ethical dilemmas that arise when the medical field intersects with the criminal justice system. It prompts us to question the inherent biases and power dynamics perpetuating these injustices, ultimately challenging us to advocate for reform and a more equitable society.
We are excited to embark on this critical and eye-opening journey with you. Let's discuss "Sentenced to Science" and explore its profound impact on our understanding of race, incarceration, and medical ethics.
Happy reading, and we look forward to engaging in a thoughtful and insightful discussion!
